A Look at Vonage’s Functional V-Portal

I first tried out Vonage’s Web phone service two years ago, setting it up by the same DSL broadband connection and home network that I use today. Boy, have things changed. Back next, Vonage’s shout quality was scratchy. Fast-forward to 2008, and it’s crystal clear.

Now Vonage is trying to change its hardware for the better, too. The new V-Portal, the first in a line of new devices planned by the company to give customers more of a reason to

stay, replaces the traditional boxy adapter Vonage has provided in the past.

The $80 device, available to new subscribers for $10 after rebate, is intended as a hub for basic functions including minor troubleshooting, quick access to positive Vonage functions, and speed-dialing to local services such as weather and traffic reports. Though a little fine-tuning wouldn’t hurt, the gadget did improve my latest experience with Vonage’s service.
