Battle Room from Ender’s Game Will Become a Video Game
If there ever was a science-fiction story that begged to become a video game, it’s Ender’s Game — and now that is becoming reality.
On Tuesday, video-game company Chair Entertainment announced it has formed a partnership with author Orson Scott Card to create “the first-ever video games inspired by the legendary Battle Room” featured in the classic book.

Ender’s Game, one of the most popular sci-fi novels, tells the story of a young boy who undergoes rough training to become a leader for human forces against an overwhelming alien enemy.

The agreement with Salt Lake City-based Chair Entertainment includes exclusive rights to develop the Battle Room across next-generation consoles, mobile devices and PCs. Development, in conjunction with Card, will start later that year. No date for release has been announced, although the company said the first versions will be for downloadable platforms. Reportedly, the deal does not include rights to invent games resulting from an upcoming feature film based on the book.
Challenge: A ‘Satisfying Experience’
Both parties expressed enthusiasm for the arrangement. Donald Mustard, Chair’s creative director, said he has been “a huge fan of Ender’s Game” since he was 10 years old. Card noted that “from the moment I started working with Donald Mustard and his team at Chair, I knew that these were the guys I wanted to do the first Ender’s Game video game.”
