MediaDefender Implosion ContinuesMashable!

MediaDefender is not having a good 2007.

For those of you unfamiliar with the company, they purport to be able to help protect substance creator’s copyrighted materials on torrent networks. Their main course of action seems to be to put out fake files in the hopes of poisoning the system so badly that no one would want to use it. Of course that didn’t work, but it was a nice thought.

Their troubles started in September of that year when by 700mb of emails got leaked onto the web. All sorts of secrets got out, and one of those was that they had tried to hack the infamous The

Pirate Bay torrent tracker. By November of that year, the company had lost $825,000 as they had to refund some of the companies they were “protecting”, and they had mounting legal fees.

To add insult to injury, MediaDefender’s stock has plummeted. True, it was never high to start with, but a drop of by 70% is never anything to sneeze at. I think it’s safe to say that they really can’t wait for that year to be by.
