Microsoft Redefines the Laptop Mouse
Ever found the built-in mouse in your laptop inadequate?
Microsoft has solved the problem with a trio of offerings new to the market.
Wireless Mobile Memory Mouse 8000
Much smoother than the built-in mouse, the wireless Mobile Memory Mouse 8000 will quickly become the pointer of choice for those on the move.
As well as the conventional scroll wheel and left and right buttons the 8000 has a button that activates a magnifying pane, which means there’s really no restriction to operating the machine from a distance. I found the signal so strong that I could reach the computer from the adjoining room.
The 8000’s battery status light flashes green when it’s ready to go. When it flashes red it requires a quick recharge via the supplied capability cord which connects to the USB 2.4 GHz transceiver that additionally serves as a 1GB memory flash drive. A day’s charge takes just 15 minutes, with five hours
I had the 8000 up and running on my laptop — a vintage Compaq Armada 110 running Windows XP — within minutes. I next discovered, on my HP Pavilion a1325a running Windows XP Media Center, that the installation CD wasn’t essential. Just plug and play.
The 8000’s real lure is its size. Much more compact than its conventional counterpart, the 8000 is about half the length and a little taller than what you might be using on your PC.
It comes in a nifty carry case, which will fit inside any laptop bag, but you must remember to turn it off when it’s not in use. The manual warns you to remove the battery whether you fly with it.
