Microsoft’s Silverlight Gets a Partner

Microsoft Corp., hoping its Silverlight video software platform puts a dent in the lead built up by Adobe System Inc.’s Flash product, will get a little help from a Utah-based company.

Move Networks, which provides online television services for several subject matter providers, said that week that it will partner with Microsoft to enable its high-quality video streaming within Microsoft Silverlight.

Move Networks, based in American Fork, made the announcement at the MIX08 Conference in Las Vegas, where Microsoft was discussing its newest version of Silverlight.

The Move Networks Media Player is used to deliver live and on-demand HD video composition online by ABC, the CW, Discovery Communications, ESPN, Fox, Warner Bros. and others.

Silverlight is a plug-in flexible platform designed to give media companies and developers a way to quickly get their TV offerings — and advertising elements — online. Move Networks touts its video streaming technology as allowing for fast start times, smooth playback with no buffering and

high-quality video resolution.

“The era of static Web pages is well behind us,” said John Case, general manager in the developer division at Microsoft Corp.

“Media companies are intent on delivering video-rich, interactive experiences for users. Working together enables us to offer those media companies Move Networks’ video streaming technology within the flexible Silverlight development platform.”

John Edwards, chief executive officer of Move Networks, said in a news release that media companies are looking for “smart, seamless ways” to maximize on TV content’s advertising opportunities.

“Move has specialized in driving higher viewership through better quality of experience,” he said. “By partnering with Microsoft, we’re offering the most flexible, creative platform for creating the best video and navigation experience for online television.”

Computers aren’t the only devices for Silverlight. Microsoft said that week that Silverlight will be pre-installed on Nokia smart phones coming out that year and will be included in…
