New Intel Motherboard Wakes Up Tech Industry

In a move to reduce consumer energy consumption, some high-tech companies are revealing plans to support a new capability Intel is adding to choose versions of its motherboard products.

Dubbed Remote Wake, the technology does what it says — it enables the home PC to “wake up” for incoming VoIP calls as well as remote-media access to photos, videos and music by the World Wide Web.

“Businesses are increasingly utilizing VoIP,” said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT

Research. “If you are using an application like Skype, the Intel motherboard technology will allow your PC to be alerted to phone calls coming in, to essentially wake up and create some sort of digital ringtone to sharp the owner a signal is coming in or to fall by to voice-mail mode.”
