Top 5 Ubuntu ApplicationsChris Pirillo

Alyxander from the chat room decided to send in a list of his Top 5 Ubuntu Applications:

I’ve been listening to your show and I decided to give you my top five programs to install on Ubuntu (or one of its variants).

  1. Ubuntu-restricted-extras - that gives you all you plugins (such as Java and Flash). To install: sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras OR search for it in the Synaptic Package Manager.
  2. Automatrix - Is a great application that will give you a simple one visit install for various applications like Wine, Skype, Songbird, etc…
  3. OpenOffice.Org - Not just the writer, but the complete suite. It is a great Microsoft Office replacement.
  4. Xchat - whether you’re
watching Chris’ stream and you want to enhance your experience, look into Xchat. In my opinion, it’s one of the best IRC clients ever made.
  5. VLC - A wonderful, light weight media player that has the ability to encode files to MP4, which is particularly great for humans who watch a lot of Youtube videos.

Well that my top five! What are you favorite Ubuntu applications?
