Web Convergence Is Hot Topic at World Mobile Conference

The convergence of the Web with your mobile phone gained pace Monday at the World Mobile Conference.

Microsoft Corp. announced the acquisition of Danger, a Silicon Valley software company that specializes in mobile Web services and features a well-regarded user interface to boot. Nokia, the world’s largest handset maker, announced two new services as it moved to expand its business from hardware to the Web. And Sony Ericsson announced a premium handset to capture the Web convergence market.

While having a cameras and music on cell phones is old news, the next big step is to manufacture mobile phones as diverse as personal desktop computers.

It is being called convergence, but there is a lot of colliding going on as handset manufacturers, software companies and World Wide Web firms race to occupy new space, sometimes seeking allies in former foes.

While Sony Ericsson’s partnership with Microsoft is aimed at the business customer and could give it greater appeal

in the U.S. market, Microsoft’s acquisition of Danger signals its move toward the consumer space.

Danger Inc., based in Palo Alto, California, is best known for its Sidekick cell phone and for efficient software that allows cell phone users to browse the Web, access e-mail and exchange instant messages, carrying with it the cachet of youth and usability appealing to Microsoft as it penetrates the mobile market.

“The addition of Danger serves as a perfect complement to our existing software and services and additionally strengthens our dedication to improving mobile experiences centered around individuals and what they like,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft.
